I lived with my family in Dubai for nearly 5 years. Many people say, Dubai is a great place to live and see the world. With Emirates airline offering direct flights to all continents, and 100+ countries around the globe, it’s understandable.
One of the hidden gems though lies, just across the border from UAE, 30 minutes flight or 4 hours drive from Dubai. Oman. Fascinating country, with beautiful nature, and one of the most friendly people I ever met.
I and my 2 companions (a.k.a. family) always wanted to go there for a road trip, but always other, more “fancy” destinations, where chosen: Seychelles, Japan, RSA, Vietnam, Singapore, Mauritius, just to name a few… So, when our time in Dubai was coming to an end, and we had one month to do absolutely anything we wanted, we took the car, packed it with camping stuff (yes, the green tent you see was our home), food, bbq, wood, and sufficient supply of drinks, and drove towards Muscat.
Some last minutes arrangements forced us to shorten the adventure a little, but still we managed to see some spectacular places.
Since we had seen Muscat in the past, we decided to skip it, and just headed towards Sur, where we watched local fishermen, fixing their boats and nets. Wonderful, quiet town, so much different from always busy, and always trying to break world records - Dubai.
Wadi Shab surprised us with fantastic canyon, and cristal clear water in the middle of the desert.
Ras al Jinz, where giant turtles come to lay eggs during the night. A unique experience, being so close to the nature.
But - visit to Oman cannot be completed without Jebej Shams! The highest peak in the region. Campsite near the top, night was freezing cold, with heavy winds, and the sunrise that followed - simply breathtaking. You even have company during breakfast - the goats. They are very cheeky and they are very curious what you are having on your plate. Incredible, what nature was able to create over thousands, or millions of years. We will return :)
There is much more to see in Oman.
